u.s.naganathan hello saw fit to inform LIH that: 
>When  is type in the smbstatus command I get the following error
>couldnt open the status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK

Do this -

1) Start smbd and nmbd
2) use either smbclient or a windows machine to conenct to a share
3) Run 'smbstatus'

You should now have a report on current Samba connections.

'smbstatus' reports on current Samba connections. If there are no active
connections to the share currently, smbstatus will die with the above mentioned
error.
