gracefully accepted.

Usually, you could say that there is nothing like standard linux.
You get kernel and GNU's utilities [which are a great job]. The rest
is the job of the people at the distro's office to collect compatible
software and burn the CDs. Check at the installation time, even if
most distros include this [I think mine doesn't], this may not be
a default option in the standard installation and you hmay have to
check it yourself.. or upgrade from the CD.

I am told that ext2 tries to minimize fragmentation of the data
while working.

by 5% it is usually OK. I have worked with Windows 3%-4% regularly.
If we repeatedly use only some files, OS + a couple fo apps, then
total fragmentation will usually be 5% or so, even in Windows, which
is not to an alarming degree. You will not encounter the need to
defrag your workstation, according to me, ever.

Just relax. In another 6 months, ext3 will be hopefully there to rescue
you if you are a red-hat fan. Right now you could get ahead with SuSE
and ReiserFS. Bottomline = for your workstation, there is little need
for you
to worry about fragmentation.
