i noticed that in suse the name of the kernel is vmlinuz without any mention
of version  number unlike in redhat where it will also have a version
number.maybe you can run lilo by using yast2 in which there is a sytems
admin section .the tool yast2 is also available outside of x by typing
yast.yast has a lot of features you can use and possibly solve your problem.
