Personally, I use pine for personal mails and stuff, and mutt for all my group mails - 
the advantage with mutt is that with threads neatly tucked and ordered, you can 
intelligently follow a conversation. 

        And like all Unix tools, Pine and Mutt interoperate, plus you can define Pine 
style macros into mutt.... I had posted a question some time ago, poke at the archives.
