FAQ, FAQ. Your version of php3 doesn't have mysql support. Either
compile the sources with mysql support, or download this RPM:
(It's a mandrake RPM, but it works fine under RedHat)

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/contrib/RPMS/php-mysql-3.0.14-2mdk.i586.rpm

And then edit /etc/httpd/php3.ini and uncomment the lines referring to
mysql.
