the GPM problem have nothing to do with the irq, but with the
mouse type config in the gpm.  If you do not use cut and paste
in the console, then you can forget this by removing the links 
from /etc/rc.d/rc[0..6].d/gpm, but uninstalling will open a 
dependency problem with mc (midnight commander) which uses the 
shared library.
so if you are in RedHat Linux, use ntsysv to opt which services
you want to start, and to reconfigure the mouse, use mouseconfig.
