You are trying to establish a PPP connection to linux box which you may not
require for file transfer.
Now if you want to have just shell prompt then dial through Hyper Terminal
from window and you will get a shell prompt, as you get on console. No
configuration is required. BTW reduce the speed to 33kbps or 56 kbps in
inittab entry.
For file transfer from shell prompt use rz and sz. It is much faster as
there are no over heads of PPP packets.
You can do many things in shell also.
PPP connection is required if your server is part of big network and you
want to access other machine which are connected to this server.
