Press ctrl + ]  (this info is shown when telnet starts) to disconnect from
remote system and get to telnet prompt. Press ctrl + D to get to shall
prompt. If you can't do this press ctrl + z to stop telnet and get shell
prompt. Do ps ax to list all processes (pipe to less if the list is too
large). search for telnet (ps uax | grep telnet) to find the PID. kill it
with 
kill <pid of telnet>
or kill -9 <pid of telnet>
