The problem might be with the hostname resolution. I had similiar
problem with httpd and sendmail. (I don't use ppp :) )
Check if you have the file /etc/hosts all fine. It should have the
following entries (in this format).

$cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
ur.i.p.add urhostname.urdomain urhostname #replace by urs.
#any others
