Check the permissions - /var/spool/mail directory should be world writeable,
individual files inside should have rw for the respective user.

Maybe this unlocked state (use :0: to set locks) might have corrupted your
mailbox? Try viewing it with vi and deleting junk characters etc.
Also netscape / kmail etc use their own mailbox formats. Mutt / Pine read from
/var/spool/mail
