Hello ,
You were right ! Perhaps there was a problem with my agpgart.o
kernel module. Since I had upgraded my kernel
to 2.2.16-3 I had thought this wasn't the problem. After I got your letter,
I went to Intel's site (support.intel.com) and downloaded the file
release_linux.pdf , printed it out and did what it said and guess what, my X
IS RUNNING , EVEN AT
1024x768 RESOLUTION AT 16 BIT COLOR.
Besides this I got a bonus . After I fixed the X problem, I also
managed to fix the audio problem . Now I can listen to
CD music, WAV files ,etc . The alsa drivers are good. ( Today I will try to
play mp3 ). In this regard, Shanu's webhowto you
pointed me to helped a lot.
But I now have got one more problem ( again!!) . When I use
Xconfigurator to use graphical login, I get the old
640x480 screen with 16 colours. But after getting to X ,when I open an
xterminal and give the command 'init 4' and then
in the text mode when I do startx I get the 1024x768 resolution screen
with lots of colours). Can you tell me what file to change when I want to
set up graphical login manually ?
            Thanks in advance.

            Regards,
            Santanu Chatterjee,
