If Call waiting is enabled, the person who rings your (busy) telephone line
gets a ringback tone (No Queue / Voice messages) , and you get a beep on the
line. You can hook-flash (On some type of exchanges you've to also dial a
single digit after this) to answer the new call & keep the old call on hold.
Most modems get confused when it hears the audio beep and start retraining.
They would very likely disconnect as well because this beep keeps repeating
every 5 secs or so.

As far as I know, modems doesn't transmit any "RING" message when this
occurs, They just treat the beep as an erroenous signal and get real
confused :-).. ( Not sure if there are any newer modems which are smart
enough to detect a Call waiting tone when it sees one and can take some
action based on it )
