Let X run as you wish. Just switch to another terminal, login and use
vlock -a. man vlock for the details. You may want to disable telnet too, if you want a
more secure box. Oh yes, don't forget to add a password to lilo.conf, so that nobody
can just reboot the machine and get into single user mode.
I have made a user with vlock -a in ~/.bash_profile followed by exit.
Logging in as that user automatically locks up the machine, unlocking him causes him
to logout.
even su - username locks up the machine.
