No need to change the xdm. IIRC there is an image in some
directory, I'll have to search which is just displayed. Changing it should
allow you to do it.
See the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 and change it as u like.
I have not tried the above myself since I am not running xdm
anymore.
