you need to edit your .Xdefaults file. There you can set global window
behaviour, along with customisation of Xresources of individual packages
like XEmacs, Xterm and Xchat. I am not sure whether theres a specific man
page for Xdefaults but you will get a fair idea how it works by looking at
it. For customizing the appearance of your application look for xresources
in their man pages
