Apart from kernel sound support, try alsa also. It's avaialble at
www.alsaproject.org
As far as kernel compile is concerned, it will be fast enough if you don't do a
'make clean' If it's first compile, then it's going to take around 5 minutes.
Kernel 2.4 is not yet released but you can get it from www.kernel.org.
