Thanks Yunus. Somestuff from the diskless-howto seems to be old. I am using 
etherboot-4.6.10
The howto gives the following command to create the tagged kernel image 
mknbi-linux -d rom -i rom -k zImage -o bootImage
But in this new version the command is as follows :
mknbi-linux --output=linux --target=<name for tagged kernel image>  zImage

Still I will go through the howto.

The network card on the 386 machine on which I am trying this stuff is ne2000 
compatible. It is recognised by the boot image from floppy. No problems.

Sorry. Cannot do that here. No other linux machine around.

The 386 machine has got just 2 cards. 1 lan card, 1 video card. And anyhow we are not 
opening the machines. You know how are things at some of the companies.
