Check if hosts / dns is configured ...

127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost
192.168.1.1     foo.example.com         foo

Also see if the lo has been brought up (ping 127.0.0.1) ... and if a
hosts.allow / hosts.deny entry is blocking this.

 Change the network card and try?
