I suggest you get one of the log analysis tools available on freshmeat.
On exim (which I run on my servers now) this can be done with just one line -
log_file_path = /usr/exim314/logs/exim_%slog (produces exim_mainlog,
exim_rejectlog and exim_paniclog)
