Not possible with NT 3.5 and 4.0  Do not know about WinDOS 2000.

The problem is NT does not do PAM authentication.  It knows of only two 
types of authentication - users local to the machine and users listed in 
the PDC.  You workaround using samba to get around the proble is correct.

I am not sure about WinDOS 2000 because (a) the marketoids claim that 
Active Directory etc. are a giant leap forward and (b) I've never 
bothered to install and try it out.
