Cookies can, like most things in life, be used for both good and bad. 
On the positive side, cookies give the ability to customize your
experience of a site (like My Yahoo, for example).  On the negative side
cookies could be used to track what you do on some site and sell this
usage data to other sites compromising your privacy.

The best solution to this problem I've come across is to install a proxy
such as junkbuster and configure it to allow cookies only from trusted
domains such as yahoo.com
