hi neeraj,
Samba server in linux is an implementation of the Lan manager server and the
SMB protocol.U can use samba to use the linux box as a file server accessible
by the windows,os/2.....networks.it works based on netbios over tcpip.there
is also a netbios name server built into samba which can be user as an
equivalent to WINS and a browse master. The concept of a pdc is microsoft
specific. The SAM of windows NT cannot be available on linux.but as an
alternative the unix password database or a seperate samba userfile can be
maintained to authenticate users.Samba will make the linux system transparent
in the windows network and U will not find any difference from the user
interface or usage as the network neighbourhood in windows shows all LAN
manager based servers the same way let it be a win95,WFW,NT to samba.
Use a tool like swat or gnosamba to configure samba if U want windows NT
server to be the authentication server point UR password server to the nt
server in samba conf.if U want to migrate from winnt to linux, well there is
no migration wizard or any such thing.U have to recreate all the user
accounts in the linux box make it the master browser and in win95 access
control tab in network properties make the linuxmachine as the authentication
server and not the domain controller. This will eork only with 95 machines not
winnt WKS as the become part of a domain and need machine accounts.
U can make shares for profiles, netlogon etc and also UR regular file shares
All the best for UR migration

regards

sanjeev
