If you have access to PCQ June 2000 CD, the one with RH 6.2, it has all
Linux articles printed in the magazine since '96.
There is an article:
/pcq/articles/articles/file.html
It gives a detailed explanation on how to set up file associations. Although
there us probably a far easier way to do what you have asked, this is more
relevant to your subject line.
If you don't have access to the CD, I can mail it to you off-list
