If it is a normal gzipped file

to decompress :
gzip -d file.rms  ( do we neet to rename to file.gz first? )

to compress:
gzip -f -9 file

The uncompressed file might be an image of the filesystem. You can dd it
to a ramdisk and mount it or mount it directly using the loopback device.
