Depends on your mail client. Setting the following in my .muttrc works
for me:
set sig_dashes
set signature "\"/usr/games/fortune -s|\""
If you use vim as your email editor with mutt, putting the following in
your .vimrc will also work:
au BufNewFile,BufRead mutt* :r !echo "-- "; /usr/games/fortune -s
For using with pine the same, enable alternate editor in pine settings
(with vim as the alternate editor) and replace the mutt* above with pico*.
And if you are not using mutt/vim, one more reason to switch!
