Errr, I read the original message as compiling the kernel while installing, from the
bash prompt that appears during the installation process (tty2, IIRC).
For Redhat, that would be tough, since it might require a chroot somewhere.
Essentially the situation is the same as if you boot from the CDROM into rescue mode,
so if you have another installation to play around with, you might try to figure it
out. IIRC, it requires hat you create a temporary directory, mount your filesystem
properly under it, and then chroot to that directory.
