[LIH] dpkg error

I get this after a woody upgrade:

/bin/sh: /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure No such file or directory
....apt returned error code 127

I believe this is a perl 5.6 install botchup...any work arounds?
Right now, upgrades are as good as dead....would appreciate some quick help
