Hi everybody,
I am dealing with computers since last 5 years. I am
very confident of
loading, finetuning & trouble shooting of OS,
Application Softwares etc in
Software.I can troubleshoot any Intel based machines
and set them right in
Hardware.
I have hands on experience with Linux.I can load
Linux(Redhat,Slackware,SuSe, Caldera) and to a certain
extent trouble shoot
Linux also. Now I would like to seriously take up
System
Administration(Network Administration also)of Linux. I
have good experience
of Window$ environment(window$ 98 & NT also). I was
following PCQuest since
1993 and regularly following Linux in their
magazines.Thanks to them now at
least I am capable of trying to learn the following:
Now I would like to learn the implementation of the
following on my own.
Apache Web Server -including Virtual hosting
Samba Server (Connecting Window$ machines also)
NFS
Domain Name System & DHCP
Mail Server
Remote Booting
Proxy Server(Squid)
RAID with IDE Hard Disk Drives.
I know that most of the above will be loaded along
with Linux. PCQuest has
covered all the above at different points of time and
it has been well
documented also. But will the same work for the newer
versions also(like
Redhat 7.0)? Any one good book for the above both as a
ready reckoner and
with in depth coverage of the above topics.
Recently I had installed e-Desktop open Linux from
Caldera and was really
surprised to see how easy it is as far as
configuration of any thing is
considered mainly due to their superior Control Panel
with which you can
virtually control everything. The same is not
available in Rdhat Linux 6.2
Why is it so? I have read in PCQuest so many times
that any Linux will vary
only in the installation part only, after that it is
one and the same(more
or less) but i feel that e-Desktop Linux's Control
Panel is the best & may
be RHL 7.0 's Control Panel has been improved to match
Caldera's. Am I
right?
Finally to become a professional in Linux do you think
knowledge of
programming language like "C" is a must and knowledge
of shell programming
also necessary? I am not interested in doing any
programming whether it is
in C or Shell programming. If it is necessary to what
extent?
Thank you in advance.
