Actually, control panels are good for desktops - but they are a danger on
servers - too many security holes, lots of junk packages loaded etc etc.

Tarballs are far better for the job.

Redhat 6.2 has linuxconf, mandrake has drakconf, ...

I suppose so.  Not that RH 7 is any kind of improvement over rh6 - too many
bugs

yes - you dont _need_ it if you stick to linuxconf and such - but it helps.
