Ashwin,
Thanks for the suggestion. Though it did not work directly it suggested
steps I should take to make sound work on the i810.

In my case, init.d was in /etc/rc.d.
When I did /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound stop
I got an error message (forgot what it was).

In any case I recompiled the kernel to include sound support in the form
of modules (previously it had been directly compiled in). So soundcore and
sound modules were automatically loaded. I then did a modprobe snd-card
intel8x0 and cd /usr/src/alsa-driver-0.5.9d and ./snddevices. But when I
used alsamixer and aplay there was still no sound.

I therefore did insmod snd-mixer-oss. After that I used kmix to raise
volumes (alsamixer did not seem to be doing the job).

Now sound works: I can play files (at least .wav and .au, haven't tried
others) and also the CD. Thanks. I can finally say that my desktop is
fully functional.
Philip
