It is good if you are not using some packages. I could not get
dropcaps in my pdf file using pdflatex. A question on miktex mailing
list, did not elicit any reply. But ps2pdf gave me horrible fonts. So,
if one is using plain latex without resorting to fancy packages,
pdflatex should be fine.
