there is a good documentation about PAM in linux RH 6.2  in 

lynx -> local docu...-> pam-0.72->html->pam.html 


it has got through description about all the configuration files and 
working of pam

path of the index files /user/doc/pam-0.72/pam.html in my RH 6.2 machine
