Did you make the fontpath to pint to the directory where the fonts are installed? 
Frankly, the second link, http://home.c2i.net/dark/ has a far better explanation on 
the ttf setup than the ldp doc. I hope that it helps, because I've never had to fiddle 
with xset after the one time I installed the fonts.
