Try using wvdial. IMHO it is the best dialer.

Subject: [LIH] Modem Configuration on Linux
Dear Friends,
I have been trying to configure a GVC 56 Kbps external modem on Red Hat 7.0.
It uses the rockwell chipset. I wanted to connect to VSNL using the number
172222 which is assigned in Mysore. I configured the modem using kppp from
the Gnome window manager under KDE menus. I used a script based method for
connecting to the internet. The modem was able to dial in to the VSNL
server and went till the authentication, but immediately it gets
disconnected and throws up an error message "peer is not authorised to use
address <dynamically_assigned_ip_address of vsnl>".
Have I overlooked something perhaps ? Can anybody help me in configuring
the internet access using linuxconf ? Any inputs would be appreciated.
Once the internet access is through, I wish to share the connection using
squid.
Regards,
Surjo Das.
