I donot think that this is the reason for dns dying.
Because then it would not have worked at all. Or the
time duration between its shutdown whould have be
constant. Check is the machine having too much load.
Must be some other problem.

Addition to my previous post on the sam subject.
Could one reason for the named process dying be:-
name server 1 is running on a real ethernet address
and a real IP
name server 2 is on a virtual ethernet
name server 1 needs to backup domain data to name
server 2 from time to time
This is where things are going wrong. There is no
nameserver 2 in the real
sense and hence named crashes.
