This is not an installation problemo it seems.
>From the error it seems that the mysql client is not able to connect to
the mysql server using the file socket. Another way is to use TCPIP to
connect using the host and port options. But what I think is that the
mysql server on the machine is not up.
Check if mysql server daemon is starting up properly. Look in
/var/log/messages
