I don't have the 2.4 kernel yet but are you running the tests on the same
HDDs? The results do vary with different drives and load conditions. I
have found the performance to increase greatly with Quantum drives, less
with Maxtor and almost none with Seagate (all 5400 rpm on
kernel 2.2.16) drives.
