IMO, Microsoft releases its proprietary Word document format only after
a new version is released. So, currently, Microsoft has released only
Word 97 format.
You can find plenty of Linux word processors that implement Word 97
format (My computer has two - abiword and kword). Both can read, but
cannot save as Word 97. But I think StarOffice and WordPerfect can both
save and read Word 97.
Easiest would be to save as XML and later convert to Word 2000.
