what do you think? someone did a rm -rf */* in root dir?

If you think the work is very important, I suggest remove the
harddisk, put it on another machine with linux. mount the root filesystem
on the box read-only, run mc and select undelete files in the command
menu. then select all the files and copy them to some directory. You might
be able to get some things out of it if you are lucky. Although you will
have to make sense out of those files yourself.
You may also get away with installing linux again in the windoze
partition, and doing the above.

I agree this may not be the best solution. List may suggest some
better ones.
However read the two mini howto's on this before proceeding. you
can get both of them on www.linuxdoc.org or on almost all linux
installations.

        Ext2fs-Undeletion-Dir-Struct

        Best of Luck.
