That's a stupid bug with the rtl8139 card. Advice - if that's a server, throw
the card into the dustbin and get yourself something like an eepro100 / 3com
card. Preferably 3com - some eepros have a similar (buffer overflow related)
problem.
I have seen this rtl8139 (and the closely related via-rhine) freeze a machine
(our NAT server, as it happens) - cutting the network off till
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
