[--symbol-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific]
I used to get the same error till I applied the fix which I had posted.
(which I found it on Borland's jbuilder.linux newsgroup I think). And
these error messages don't appear for me now.
Check if the ttf file you copied is named "symbol.ttf" and not
"Symbol.ttf" or "symbol.TTF".
