Very simple
Don't do anything as root unless it cribs that you don't have permissions.
In verbose mode,
Typical things root is supposed to do are as follows
1)Manage users i.e. create/enable/disable/delete them
2)Manage disk space. i.e. create/delete partitions and delete any unncessary
files.
3)Manage daemons i.e. services running on your box like sendmail, apache, news
etc.
4)Look after security and activity log for the better health of the service.
5)Manage software i.e. install or configure/compile/install/configure the
software.
Rest of the things user can do and hence root should not be doing them.
In other words, users are suppose to do their work and root is suppose to do
everything else required. Reasonings for all this is not too difficult to
establish. That exercise is left to you.(So I don't claim that I know them...
;-))

LIH is all for free speech. But it was created
for a purpose. Violations of the rules of
this list will result in stern action.
