Did you get anything like "kernel image is too big"? What config file did you
use (not your old 2.2 one I hope)?
Do a make menuconfig and go with (more or less) the defaults. That should
help. I'll send you my 2.4 kernel config file when I reach office today - it
works for me (but you might have to fix it for your network card / display
drivers etc - I've removed support for a lot of stuff I don't use or need).
