All the answers below are with refrence to postgres on linux.

|[1] The databases should preferably sport a GUI interface ( preferably
|because, the entries will be done by inexperienced individuals-- and we do
|not want to spend a lot of time with them explaining how to enter the
|data ) . First of all is it possible.. ??

The gui intreface is provided by client and not data base. You normally have
variety of clinets including a web based with perl/php.

|[2] The database should be network based that is distributed database.. I
|should be able to access my database from a centralised server from any
|client, but with appropriate permissions..

Linux is based on network only so every thing under linux is network based
:-)

|[3] what about an RDBMS ...??
|[4] and also security is top priority on my mind...Will the database permit
|view based security like in Oracle. For example students should be able to
|see only their personal details and not of others.. Also they should not be
|allowed to look at their internal marks before a certain date.. So i need
to
|solve problems like these which are plenty...

Security is not one time job and one has to keep an eye on exploits.
|
|[5] Ease of use.....

The client decides the ease of use.

|[6] Licensing issues.... I know this may not be much of a matter..in
Linux..

FREE

|[7] Also Its capability-- Like what is the maximum database size it can

Postgres can grow up 12GB , experts can corret me.

|support--

Come to linux-India.

|[8] What are the Hardware capabilities required-- Also what distros to be
|used.. Can i use Redhat or Suse or Mandrake..???

Secuirity wise debian would be best.

|I know about COMPAQ presarios .. They are definitely NOT Linux friendly..
|However we have COMPAQ Deskpro clients ( all of them are so) ...what about
|them..???

For web based client you do not need linux on client. The client can be your
wap phone also.

|My request to those who answer my queries, is to suggest appropriate links
|for the software, books, interesting experiences, any intersting info etc..
