Distributed database is quiet different from accessing database from
anywhere. I hope you understand what you are saying. Why does a university
server needs distributed database? What's your load? You need distributed
database when you need cluster of database servers...

These are your application requirement so do it in application.

Don't create student users in database. Authenticate them using pam and let
the application decide what to show and what not to.

Oracle 9i provides such features as virtual views etc. But I doubt if you
really want them in database...

You should know SQL though..

Whatever distro you use, use kernel 2.4.x.

You better know requirement so decide hardware yourself.

As a rule of thumb,
Put a loads of RAM like 512MB etc. and big enough harddisk like 20GB,
preferrably SCSI.
Any cpu more than 600 MHz(Not celeron... of course) should be OK. Prefer AMD
cpus if you get a 100MHz FSB with DDR. Duron is cost saver and athlon is
beast. You take a pick...
