No, it is not just press coverage anymore. Recently the FBI announced that 1
Million card data have been stolen from many e-comm servers in the US. The
culprits are mainly from eastern Europe and Russia. They are using some
common exploits in NT servers to do the Job. These exploits have been
patched long time back. But the sysadmins who are responsible have not
their job very well..
Anyway the FBI has already issued a warning to all who use NT server and
workstns about this..
One need not be paranoid about this, but at the same time one need to be
cautious while doing the transaction on the Net.
Like ensuring that the browser that we use, supports 128 Bit encryption.
This can be verified using <<Help>> => <<ABout>> in IE and in a similar way
in Netscape.
Those who have IE5.5 already have this. But users need to check for the
previous versions.
Ditto with Netscape, by going to their website.
ALso do not do the transaction if that particular website does not use SSL.
A secure transacton can be verified by seeing as to whether an icon of a
closed lock is displayed at the bottom of the browser.
Only those web pages who have this lock icon displayed will have that web
page transmitted after encryption. All the others ( without that locked
icon) are transmitted in raw format.
Also read the Privacy policy of the website. COmb it and find any
inconsistencies. I have read many privacy notices of many websites. Some of
them are deadly.. They use fine jargon to tell u that your data may be
shared. Watch out for those guys.
And watch carefully your monthly CC statement for any inconsistencies..
Keep all the emails regarding those electronic transactions carefully ( Both
hard copy and soft) . This data that we supply may be needed in future in
case there is any dispute. Ditto with Receipts.

I fully agree with this.
