Please read the howto on compiling kernels first ....
make menuconfig (or take the config file from the redhat kernel rpm, put it
into the /usr/src/linux tree base as .config and run make oldconfig)
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install
I dont see any hassle to pppd working, once you have compiled it properly.
