The alsa-drivers have not been configured properly or there is some
resource conflict (do u have 2 sound cards ??)

if you do an lsmod you should be able to see the two problem modules in
the "initialising" state ....

I faced this condition quite a few times when I was configuring my
sndcards

this is not limited to alsa... 

a module that is not properly loaded cannot be unloaded!!
