Whenever using vmware, never boot an existing linux partition. A
few friends here tried and fscked their systems.
When you try to boot linux from an existing partition, vmware does
something to make the disk appear continuous (I am not sure what it does).
So if you try to boot a partition without including all of them, the disk
geometery is likely to change.
This also causes some of the filesystems to crash. My friends /
had developed some errors. After using fsck we found that /etc/fstab now
contained garbage.
Also vmware offers a virtual machine and thus if you are able to
boot into linux (or windows) partition, kudzu will detect the changes in
hardware and configure your machine for that bogus hardware. When you boot
again directly into linux, you find none of the drivers you installed work
anymore.
The best way to install vmware is to use an empty partition for
root and mount the rest of the the partitions into it. Format an empty
partition of about the same size of your root partition and copy all the
files from root partition to it. Now boot vmware, put a linux CDROM in the
drive and boot from it in vmware. Choose upgrade and choose the / as this
new partition. Unselect all packages and go on to the lilo install. Don't
Install lilo on the mbr but on the new partition. In this way all the
vmware specific settings will only be in the new partition and will not
corrupt your original filesystem.
