cd to /usr/src/linux and uncomment the line that says CONFIG_SMP.
Then make dep; make clean

[Alternatively, you can also cp /boot/config-running_kernel_version
/usr/src/linux/.config and make dep; make clean]

Then run the vmware install again.

PS: Assuming that /usr/src/linux is the same kernel as the kernel that is
currently running.
